The last structure on Hipp’s property was, Gideon studied it, a halfway shed—halfway to falling down. It wasn’t as derelict as the first one, but also not as nice as the last one.

For a reason Gideon didn’t want to explore, it reminded him of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

One was too broken. One was too perfect and the last one was…just right? It was hard, however, to find anything right in this situation.

He sure didn’t actually want to find what they were looking for—did he know what they were looking for—with Cinzia along for the ride. She and her bodyguard were too much of a wild card.

Logic dictated she couldn’t have anyone killed right now. Too many people knew they drove off into the swamp with her.

But did logic and Cinzia reside in the same body? Or did she possess a “logic” that allowed for a lot of collateral damage and expensive lawyers?

Cinzia didn’t rush forward when they pulled to a stop. It could have been the heat, which had impossibly gotten worse. Or…she was up to something.

Did she know something they didn’t? Okay, yes she knew a lot of somethings that they didn’t, but did she know something critical to this moment that they didn’t?

Leroy pulled the door open, revealing a dim interior and causing some more of that animal skittering inside.

If it had windows, they were covered. The interior was only lit by the light coming in the door.

Leroy deployed his flashlight, the beam shooting out and landing on a truck. Was this Hipp’s missing truck? It looked just about the right amount of dilapidated to qualify.

“Looks like Hipp’s,” Leroy observed.

To Gideon’s surprise, Leroy pulled out gloves and pulled them on before trying the driver door. It opened and he peered in, checking the visor and under the seat. “No keys, that I can see,” he observed.

Jessica came forward, holding up the key ring the lawyer had given her. She singled out a key.

“Try this one.”

Leroy checked the seat, feeling along the seam before sliding in and firing the engine. He turned it off immediately and rested his arms on the steering wheel, the gloved finger of one hand tapping the curve.

“Definitely Hipp’s,” Leroy said, in the same reflective tone as before.

Did he have some training in crime scene investigation? Gideon could make the case either way, though he should have phoned this in.

“Can I borrow your
